Of Snowy Mountains and Mountainous Backdrops

Story by Zac Dorio

You don’t have to travel far to enjoy these surrounds, only 1 hour from Melbourne’s CBD is Yarra Junction, a small town with backdrops of huge national parks and rolling hills. We arrived just on sunset and met our hosts and got settled in, and spent the later part of the afternoon by the fire listening to the kookaburras laugh and play until dark.

The tiny home was perfect for what we needed, a cosy place to base ourselves for a few days of adventure. The large floor to ceiling windows were a treat to look out and watch the sunsets and enjoy a cup of tea. We were provided with plenty of firewood for the fireplace, and extra blankets as it can get very cold in the middle of winter!

During our stay we explored the surrounding towns, specifically Warbuton where you can wander the streets and visit the smaller artisan stores, and the waterwheel visitors centre to find inspiration on things to do!

A must see is the Redwood Forest, where you can wander through the forest and enjoy being surrounded by the canopy of trees. You can also do some extra exploring and find the rushing stream at the bottom of the hill to sit and have a rest!

For the foodies, there are ample wineries and local restaurants to visit in the area. We visited Killara Estate and got a perfect seat by the window and next to the fire, where we enjoyed some local wines and incredible wood fired pizza. There are also some great local pubs and specialty coffee shops around.

If you’re keen enough to rug up and embrace the elements, a short drive from Yarra Junction is the summit of Mt Donna Buang. In winter, snowfall is common and there are large playing fields for kids on toboggans and snow throwing! We visited and were greeted with falling snow, something you don’t often experience only a short drive from Melbourne!

For those who don’t want to drive too far from the Melbourne CBD, but still want to immerse yourself in the beauty of snowy mountains and mountainous backdrops, The Junction is the perfect spot for you.
