Our Beautiful Tiny Home

Story by Zac Dorio

We arrived just on sunset, to our beautiful tiny home looking out at the paddocks. Greeted by our lovely host Suze, she welcomed us in and showed us around. We spent our first night sitting by the fire on the outdoor lounges, with not a sound except for the crackle of the fire and the rustle of the leaves.

A perfect excuse for a sleep in, as the bed was so comfy and the views were not to be wasted, we had a slow morning with coffee and sunshine, enjoying our surrounds and taking it all in. Suze was super helpful with recommendations of things to see and do, so we took her advice and jumped into the car and started our day.

Our first stop was another small town called Forrest. Home to a general store, a brewery and a post office, Forrest is the perfect place to fuel yourself for a day of hiking or mountain biking, as there are many trails and walks that start from the town. We stopped into Forrest General Store and browsed their local produce of handmade soaps and pastas, along with cheeses and local wines. A bright pink bottle of Blood Orangecello caught my eye, so it came home with me.

Not far from Forrest, the carpark and camping ground of Lake Elizabeth is where you start your small walk to the lakeside. The leaves and are thick and forest floor dense, as you walk along the path towards the lake. Passing streams and creeks along the way, keep your eye out for platypus as they are known to frequent these waters. After speaking to a few locals, the trick for spotting them is to be there at dusk or at dawn!

Colac being only a 20 minute drive from the accommodation, we ventured into town to grab some supplies and take a look around. We stopped at Lake Colac for a quick lunch by the water but were too eager to spend the afternoon sitting around the property as it was a perfect afternoon. We spent the later afternoon around the tiny home, exploring the property and relaxing. If you’re after an authentic country pub meal, I could not recommend the Farmers Arms Hotel enough. The service was great, ambience was fantastic, and the beers were icy cold.

We spent our Sunday cooking a hearty breakfast in the home, taking in the views and not much else. We did some exploring around the town and found ourselves at the famous Snowballs Ice Cream and Lolly shop, which took us back to our childhood. Lollies and sweets that I haven’t seen for years, food and drink from all parts of the world in a small country town – how bizarre! Across the road was the outdoor historic windmill farm, something unique and quirky to check out. Our last stop was the hypersaline endorheic lake, Lake Beeac. Something you don’t see often, because of its high salinity, it throws off a milky white blue colour. Something to set your eyes on!

If you are looking for a quiet and cosy stay, Drumour at Beeac is the perfect place. Remote enough to enjoy the peacefulness and space, but also close to things like beautiful walks, lakes and local produce shops.
