Tiny Away – Empire Bay

Story by Matty & Rui

The Wandering Boys
August 2020

When we arrived, it was dark and raining but we easily found our beautiful cabin following the instruction from the hosts. Parked the car, loaded all our belongings into the cabin and we were ready and excited to enjoy our weekend!

It was a decent drive from the hustle and bustle of Sydney after a week of work and our bellies were already asking to be fed. We had no energy to cook at that time of the night and the great thing about this location is that even though it feels tucked away from the city, you can quickly reach a number of restaurants and shops so we decided to pick up a couple of mouth-watering pizzas from La Fiamma Pizzeria to tuck into whilst drinking our wine and listening to the rain fall on the roof like a metaphor for our weekday stress washing away.

A new day and the calm was installed! We woke up to find the host’s horses (Zeus and Bobby) going about their life in the grass patch right next to the cabin – It was so relaxing just watching them.

The hosts have carefully put together a whole bunch of activities available in the area so we tried to tick off most of them. To start with, we’ve walked around the property to find the Dam and met our host Jerome who told us a lot about the history of the property, it’s animals and all his sustainability plans. We loved hearing about all this and felt inspired to explore more of the area.

First stop was Marie Byles lookout where the views of the bay are breathtaking and it seems like on a clear day you can even see Sydney’s CBD! It’s also the Humpback whalesmigration route so if you’re lucky, on certain months, you might spot them!

We decided to then head over to Killcare Beach for a bite to eat and checkout the beach and the surfers. The kiosk was super charming and locals seem to love it! The food was good, perfect for a midday snack with the bonus of the view of the beach. After a stroll in the beach it was time to grab a coffee in the Hardy’s Bistro – Lovely place for a cakes and brunch too. It was soon time to head back to enjoy our cabin watching a stunning sunset!

The last day! It started with fresh breakfast brought up by Jerome and this was certainly one of the highlights of our stay and 100% recommend it! Fresh baked sourdough bread, fresh & boiled laid eggs with fresh picked fried kale as well as what we can only describe as the tastiest honey ever and a spicy little number that went down a treat! Pair that with a fresh brew and you’re ready to start your day – Happy belly = happy soul!

There are a few different treks that you can choose frombut we were adamant that we wanted to see the Maitland Bay (also highly recommended by our hosts Jerome and Julie) and did not disappoint! After a mid-level hiking trek for the reasonably fit we reach the beach and it was stunning! The weather was in our favour and it was a lovely opportunity for some great shots!

We weren’t done with adventures yet and what better way to finish our weekend with a sunset at Putty beach via the Bouddi Coastal Walk… Stunning!

Thank you,

Rui & Matt
