When in Berry

Story by Lorena Rabbani and Christian Sparks

Two hours of scenic driving south of Sydney landed us in the Town of Berry, queuing at the famous Berry Donut Van just a three minute drive from the homely True Colours Tiny. I always love any drive south of Sydney, in my opinion it’s the most beautiful way out of the big smoke.

Craig was our fantastic host. He runs True Colours, an animal assisted therapy retreat on the property; so you can expect to be greeted by some very friendly horses and ponies first thing in the morning. The tiny house itself is as cosy a stay as you could find. Modern utilities including its own kitchenette, gas heated shower, extremely comfortable bed and even an AC unit for those cold winter months. I’d consider it to have all the essentials and comforts you need in a home base. The property that the Tiny is situated on is a stunning five acres of luscious green paddocks. During the stay, our days consisted of a peaceful twenty minute meditation in the morning (I’d recommend you wake for sunrise to be serenaded by native bird song), followed by some warm coffee to ease into the cool winter mornings.

After the morning rituals were done and our toes had officially been dipped into the day, it was time to dive in and pick our adventure!

Location is important when picking out a place to stay and True Colours couldn’t be a better starting point for an adventure. The only concern we had the entire trip was where to start!

We began with a drive through Kangaroo Valley – a sight to behold in itself, to visit the magnificent Fitzroy Falls. Here you can pick your own trail with a western track 4km out and back as well as an eastern track 6.1km out and back. Each are quite easy tracks so you don’t need to worry about bush walking expertise, just bring a camera and take in the incredible view from the many lookouts along the way!

Next we set off south and found ourselves passing Bendalong Point. This was a must-visit detour for us as the beach itself is stunning but Bendalong’s most unique attribute is its friendly stingrays! The stingrays can often be seen swimming near the shore so you’ll have the extraordinary experience to see them up close in the wild.

To round out our day we headed to Lake Conjola to watch the sunset and have a picnic. We brought our books, soaked in the soft daylight and let the hours melt away before returning to our tiny home base.

Following our checkout on Sunday we decided to make the most of our stay and travel down to the iconic Hyams beach for the day. We laid on the paper-white sands for hours before cruising back to Sydney in the afternoon.

The True Colours Tiny was a great weekend away. It’s a comfortable place to rest at night, the location was perfect for seeing some of NSW’s most iconic beaches, waterfalls and landscapes. If travelling around isn’t your speed the property itself provides a relaxing getaway. Turn the technology off, get lost in nature for a while and enjoy!
